Fire departments across the United States gathered on this Memorial Day to honor our nation's armed forces. We also remember those of our own ranks, members of the fire service, who have lost their lives fighting fire, or who have passed away due to other circumstances.

Dr. Carter started riding an ambulance as a junior in high school in 1964. In 1966, during the Vietnam war, he enlisted into the Air Force as an Air Force Fire Protection Specialist. He served in Alaska, the Philippians and Vietnam. When he was discharged from the military, he returned to New Je
