Training Beyond Hooks & Hoses: Are You Training On Policy?

Track: Instructor Development Conference

Session Number: ES8
Date: Sat, Sep 30th, 2017
Time: 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Room: Conference Sessions

Fire service training today provides firefighters with dynamic, engaging classroom and practical training on a variety of important topics. When someone brings up policy training, it’s usually followed by eye rolls and yawns, and the topic quickly changes to something more interesting. Training officers acknowledge the importance of tactical training to prevent injuries and LODDs and to increase efficiency on the fireground. But rarely do we view policy training in the same light. It is likely that we fail to see that, when members fail to follow policy, similar consequences can occur, including discipline, termination, injury, LODD and lawsuits.

In this program, you will learn the difference between policy and procedure (or guidelines), how to develop strong policy that is legally defensible, and how you can begin training your agency members on policy. The topic of policy and procedure may not be the most exciting in the fire service, but if your agency doesn’t have strong, defensible policy—and strong training on your agency’s policies—the consequences and negative outcomes can be as bad or worse than much of what you can envision going wrong on the fireground.
