Infusing Mental Health and Resiliency into Your Training Program

Track: Instructor Development Conference

Session Number: 32
Date: Fri, Sep 28th, 2018
Time: 1:00 PM - 1:15 PM

Description:

Since the inception of fire service training programs, Training Officers have done and excellent job of training firefighters on how to help others. However, while we have done an excellent job of teaching firefighters how to care for others, we have not addressed how to help firefighters handle the unavoidable stress and traumatic events in the course of their vocation. If these challenges are not dealt with in a productive manner they can lead to emotional and behavioral health problems.

As the firefighter suicide rate has outpaced Line of Duty Deaths many mental health and emotional support programs have emerged to provide support to our firefighters, which typically occur after the fact. This program highlights the importance of fire service training personnel, who are the subject matter experts, talking about Firefighter Resiliency in their training sessions which helps to destigmatize mental health in the fire service and make it safe to talk about.

As we all know it is easier to tell someone that your back hurts rather than my head (emotions) hurts.
